In retaliation to Snapchat CEO's Evan Spiegel's alleged uncomplimentary comments on app’s expansion by calling India a poor country, anonymous Indian hackers claim to leak data of 1.7 million users on the darknet.
The Snapchat is facing serious anger in India because of the unethical statement over India’s state that he apparently never made. Many Indians are uninstalling the app by commenting “since this app is not for the poor Indians we are removing it from our phones.” The popular social networking platform for sharing photo and video status was attacked as #BoycottSnapchat and #Uninstall_Snapchat were trending on Twitter over the weekend.
The Indian hackers who are among the top bugbounty hunters in the world working of IT giants finding bug in their system said that there was a vulnerability in Snapchat’s database last year revealing details of 1.7 million users but they never used it.
They have further threatened to carry out intensive strike against company on the virtual world till the CEO apologies for his remark.
All of this began when there was an allegation made by a former Snap Inc. employee, Anthony Pompliano, who accused Snap Inc CEO Evan Spiegel of making this statement in September 2015: “This app is only for rich people. I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain.”
However, Snapchat has not confirmed any successful hack and leak yet. The incident has also dropped the rating of the popular app to a "single star" from an apparent "five star" on the App Store. Even those who haven't even used the app are going to app stores to give it a 'thumbs down' vote.
Meanwhile, Snapchat has turned down the allegations on CEO comments by saying “This is ridiculous. Obviously Snapchat is for everyone! It’s available worldwide to download for free.” Furthermore, Snapchat was also accused of showing inflated user data and “misinformed about key metrics” to the investors.
It has also alleged that Pompliano worked with Snapchat for only three weeks and that these allegations were nothing but the rants of a disgruntled employee.
