Crazy Ransomware Gang Abuses Net Monitor and SimpleHelp for Stealthy Network Persistence

 

Not long ago, security analysts from Huntress spotted someone tied to the Crazy ransomware group using standard employee surveillance and remote assistance programs. This person used common system tools - not custom malware - to stay hidden within company networks. Instead of flashy attacks, they moved quietly through digital environments already familiar to IT teams. What stands out is how ordinary software became part of a stealthy buildup toward data encryption. Behind the scenes, attackers mimic regular maintenance tasks to avoid suspicion. Their method skips complex hacking tricks in favor of blending in. Over time, such tactics make detection harder since alerts resemble routine actions. Rather than breaking in, they act like insiders who belong. Recently, this approach has become more frequent across different cybercrime efforts. Normal-looking tool usage now masks malicious goals deep inside infrastructure.

Throughout several cases reviewed by Huntress, Net Monitor for Employees Professional appeared next to SimpleHelp’s remote access software. Using both together let attackers maintain ongoing, hands-on access to affected machines. This pairing lowered their chances of setting off detection mechanisms. Each tool played a role in staying under the radar. 

A single instance involved deployment of surveillance software through Windows Installer by running msiexec.exe, enabling adversaries to pull the agent straight from the official provider site. With it active, complete remote screen access emerged alongside command launching, data movement, and live observation of machine activity - delivering control similar to admin privileges on compromised devices. 

To tighten their hold, the hackers tried turning on the default admin account via "net user administrator /active:yes." Another layer came when they pulled down SimpleHelp using PowerShell scripts. Files were hidden under names that looked real - some copied Visual Studio’s vshost.exe pattern. Others posed as OneDrive components, tucked inside folders like ProgramData. Despite detection of a single remote component, operations persisted due to multiple deployment layers. 

Occasionally, the SimpleHelp executable appeared under altered names, mimicking standard corporate software files. Observed by analysts, these changes helped it evade immediate recognition. At times, Huntress noticed efforts aimed at weakening Microsoft Defender - achieved by halting and removing related system services - to limit detection on infected devices. One breach showed attackers setting up alert triggers inside SimpleHelp, activated whenever machines reached sites tied to digital currency storage or trading. 

These triggers watched for terms linked to wallet providers, exchange portals, blockchain lookup tools, and online payment systems. Elsewhere, the surveillance tool logged mentions of remote access software like RDP, AnyDesk, TeamViewer, UltraViewer, and VNC, possibly to spot signs of IT staff or security teams logging into affected endpoints. Despite just a single confirmed instance leading to Crazy ransomware activation, Huntress identified shared command servers and repeated file names like “vhost.exe.” These similarities point toward one actor behind both breaches. 

Notably, infrastructure links emerged across incidents. One attack stood out in impact. Yet patterns in execution imply coordination. File artifacts matched closely. Operation methods showed consistency. The evidence ties the events together indirectly. Reuse of tools strengthens that view. Infrastructure overlap was clear. Execution timing varied. Still, the digital fingerprints align. Not just one but two security incidents traced back to stolen SSL VPN login details, showing how shaky remote entry points can open doors. 

Instead of assuming safety, watch for odd patterns - like when trusted remote management software shows up without warning, used now more often by attackers who twist normal tools into stealthy weapons. Despite growing reliance on standard tools by attackers, requiring extra verification steps for every remote login helps block stolen passwords from being useful. Because hackers now blend in using common management programs, watching network behavior closely while limiting who can enter key systems stays essential for company security.

Cybercriminals Target Cloud File-Sharing Services to Access Corporate Data

 



Cybersecurity analysts are raising concerns about a growing trend in which corporate cloud-based file-sharing platforms are being leveraged to extract sensitive organizational data. A cybercrime actor known online as “Zestix” has recently been observed advertising stolen corporate information that allegedly originates from enterprise deployments of widely used cloud file-sharing solutions.

Findings shared by cyber threat intelligence firm Hudson Rock suggest that the initial compromise may not stem from vulnerabilities in the platforms themselves, but rather from infected employee devices. In several cases examined by researchers, login credentials linked to corporate cloud accounts were traced back to information-stealing malware operating on users’ systems.

These malware strains are typically delivered through deceptive online tactics, including malicious advertising and fake system prompts designed to trick users into interacting with harmful content. Once active, such malware can silently harvest stored browser data, saved passwords, personal details, and financial information, creating long-term access risks.

When attackers obtain valid credentials and the associated cloud service account does not enforce multi-factor authentication, unauthorized access becomes significantly easier. Without this added layer of verification, threat actors can enter corporate environments using legitimate login details without immediately triggering security alarms.

Hudson Rock also reported that some of the compromised credentials identified during its investigation had been present in criminal repositories for extended periods. This suggests lapses in routine password management practices, such as timely credential rotation or session invalidation after suspected exposure.

Researchers describe Zestix as operating in the role of an initial access broker, meaning the actor focuses on selling entry points into corporate systems rather than directly exploiting them. The access being offered reportedly involves cloud file-sharing environments used across a range of industries, including transportation, healthcare, utilities, telecommunications, legal services, and public-sector operations.

To validate its findings, Hudson Rock analyzed malware-derived credential logs and correlated them with publicly accessible metadata and open-source intelligence. Through this process, the firm identified multiple instances where employee credentials associated with cloud file-sharing platforms appeared in confirmed malware records. However, the researchers emphasized that these findings do not constitute public confirmation of data breaches, as affected organizations have not formally disclosed incidents linked to the activity.

The data allegedly being marketed spans a wide spectrum of corporate and operational material, including technical documentation, internal business files, customer information, infrastructure layouts, and contractual records. Exposure of such data could lead to regulatory consequences, reputational harm, and increased risks related to privacy, security, and competitive intelligence.

Beyond the specific cases examined, researchers warn that this activity reflects a broader structural issue. Threat intelligence data indicates that credential-stealing infections remain widespread across corporate environments, reinforcing the need for stronger endpoint security, consistent use of multi-factor authentication, and proactive credential hygiene.

Hudson Rock stated that relevant cloud service providers have been informed of the verified exposures to enable appropriate mitigation measures.

An era when artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming the backbone of modern business innovation is presenting a striking gap between awareness and action in a way that has been largely overlooked. In a recent study conducted by Sapio Research, it has been reported that while most organisations in Europe acknowledge the growing risks associated with AI adoption, only a small number have taken concrete steps towards reducing them.

Based on insights from 800 consumers and 375 finance decision-makers across the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, the Finance Pulse 2024 report highlights a surprising paradox: 93 per cent of companies are aware that artificial intelligence poses a risk, yet only half have developed formal policies to regulate its responsible use. 

There was a significant number of respondents who expressed concern about data security (43%), followed closely by a concern about accountability, transparency, and the lack specialised skills to ensure a safe implementation (both of which reached 29%). In spite of this increased awareness, only 46% of companies currently maintain formal guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace, and even fewer—48%—impose restrictions on the type of data that employees are permitted to feed into the systems. 

It has also been noted that just 38% of companies have implemented strict access controls to safeguard sensitive information. Speaking on the findings of this study, Andrew White, CEO and Co-Founder of Sapio Research, commented that even though artificial intelligence remains a high priority for investment across Europe, its rapid integration has left many employers confused about the use of this technology internally and ill-equipped to put in place the necessary governance frameworks.

It was found, in a recent investigation by cybersecurity consulting firm PromptArmor, that there had been a troubling lapse in digital security practices linked to the use of artificial intelligence-powered platforms. According to the firm's researchers, 22 widely used artificial intelligence applications—including Claude, Perplexity, and Vercel V0-had been examined by the firm's researchers, and highly confidential corporate information had been exposed on the internet by way of chatbot interfaces. 

There was an interesting collection of data found in the report, including access tokens for Amazon Web Services (AWS), internal court documents, Oracle salary reports that were explicitly marked as confidential, as well as a memo describing a venture capital firm's investment objectives. As detailed by PCMag, these researchers confirmed that anyone could easily access such sensitive material by entering a simple search query - "site:claude.ai + internal use only" - into any standard search engine, underscoring the fact that the use of unprotected AI integrations in the workplace is becoming a dangerous and unpredictable source of corporate data theft. 

A number of security researchers have long been investigating the vulnerabilities in popular AI chatbots. Recent findings have further strengthened the fragility of the technology's security posture. A vulnerability in ChatGPT has been resolved by OpenAI since August, which could have allowed threat actors to exploit a weakness in ChatGPT that could have allowed them to extract the users' email addresses through manipulation. 

In the same vein, experts at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference demonstrated how hackers could create malicious prompts within Google Calendar invitations by leveraging Google Gemini. Although Google resolved the issue before the conference, similar weaknesses were later found to exist in other AI platforms, such as Microsoft’s Copilot and Salesforce’s Einstein, even though they had been fixed by Google before the conference began.

Microsoft and Salesforce both issued patches in the middle of September, months after researchers reported the flaws in June. It is particularly noteworthy that these discoveries were made by ethical researchers rather than malicious hackers, which underscores the importance of responsible disclosure in safeguarding the integrity of artificial intelligence ecosystems. 

It is evident that, in addition to the security flaws of artificial intelligence, its operational shortcomings have begun to negatively impact organisations financially and reputationally.
