Chinese telecom giant divides US, UK

A Chinese telecom giant takes the centre stage of hot discourse across the Atlantic with a divided approach by UK and US to it. Washington, of late, has raised serious doubts over Huawei Technologies Co since a section of US experts has seen potential cybersecurity threat in its operation and equipment.

But the UK has rolled out red carpet to it before Huawei evinced its keen interest to invest $4.2 billion in the land of America’s most trusted allies. The announcement came up after British Prime Minister Theresa May hunkered down with Huawei Technologies Co’s chairperson Sun Yafang in Beijing a couple of week back leaving a space for an undercurrent of division between America and Britain.

Washington is still firm on its stand as a school of its legislators has talked of an impending cyber security risk in the operation of the Chinese telecom giant fearing that US networks might be more vulnerable much to Beijing’s benefit.

The US fear and suspicion is not new. The experts feared an incursion of Chinese cyber security threat in US in 2012 when a congressional report, virtually, saw likelyhood of the tentacles of Chinese spy network in the country’s telecom network when Huawei was confined to the smaller carriers only.

The US doubt and suspicion have failed to stop the proliferating market of the Chinese colossus across the globe since Huawei, these days, is the third largest smartphone manufacturing company with its switches, routers and cellular-tower gear stealing the march.

Huawei is going to capture the global market since days are not far to reach the 5G regime to hasten the network technology.
