Google is upgrading Chrome with a new autofill enhancement designed to make online forms far less time-consuming. The company announced that the update will allow Chrome to assist with more than just basic entries like passwords or addresses, positioning the browser as a smarter, more intuitive tool for everyday tasks. According to Google, the feature is part of a broader effort to streamline browsing while maintaining privacy and security protections for users. 

The enhancement expands autofill to include official identification details such as passports, driver’s licenses, license plate numbers, and even vehicle identification numbers. Chrome will also improve its ability to interpret inconsistent or poorly structured web forms, reducing the need for users to repeatedly correct mismatched fields. Google says the feature will remain off until users enable it manually, and any data stored through the tool is encrypted, saved only with explicit consent, and always requires confirmation before autofill is applied. The update is rolling out worldwide across all languages, with additional supported data categories planned for future releases. 

While the convenience factor is clear, the expansion raises new questions about how much personal information users should entrust to their browser. As Chrome takes on more sensitive data, the line between ease and exposure becomes harder to define. Google stresses that security safeguards are built into every layer of the feature, but recent incidents underscore how vulnerable personal data can still be once it moves beyond a user’s direct control.  

A recent leak involving millions of Gmail-linked credentials illustrates this risk. Although the breach did not involve Chrome’s autofill system, it highlights how stolen data circulates once harvested and how credential reuse across platforms can amplify damage. Cybersecurity researchers, including Michael Tigges and Troy Hunt, have repeatedly warned that information extracted from malware-infected devices or reused across services often reappears in massive data dumps long after users assume it has disappeared. Their observations underline that even well-designed security features cannot fully protect data that is exposed elsewhere. 

Chrome’s upgrade arrives as Google continues to release new features across its ecosystem. Over the past several weeks, the company has tested an ultra-minimal power-saving mode in Google Maps to support users during low-battery emergencies, introduced Gemini as a home assistant in the United States, and enhanced productivity tools across Workspace—from AI-generated presentations in Canvas to integrated meeting-scheduling within Gmail. Individually, these updates appear incremental, but together they reflect a coordinated expansion. Google is tightening the links between its products, creating systems that anticipate user needs and integrate seamlessly across devices. 

This acceleration is occurring alongside major investments from other tech giants. Microsoft, for example, is expanding its footprint abroad through a wide-reaching strategy centered on the UAE. As these companies push deeper into automation and cross-platform integration, the competition increasingly revolves around who can deliver the smoothest, smartest digital experience without compromising user trust. 

For now, Chrome’s improved autofill promises meaningful convenience, but its success will depend on whether users feel comfortable storing their most sensitive details within the browser—particularly in an era where data leaks and credential theft remain persistent threats.

Microsoft’s Copilot Actions in Windows 11 Sparks Privacy and Security Concerns

When it comes to computer security, every decision ultimately depends on trust. Users constantly weigh whether to download unfamiliar software, share personal details online, or trust that their emails reach the intended recipient securely. Now, with Microsoft’s latest feature in Windows 11, that question extends further — should users trust an AI assistant to access their files and perform actions across their apps? 


Microsoft’s new Copilot Actions feature introduces a significant shift in how users interact with AI on their PCs. The company describes it as an AI agent capable of completing tasks by interacting with your apps and files — using reasoning, vision, and automation to click, type, and scroll just like a human. This turns the traditional digital assistant into an active AI collaborator, capable of managing documents, organizing folders, booking tickets, or sending emails once user permission is granted.  

However, giving an AI that level of control raises serious privacy and security questions. Granting access to personal files and allowing it to act on behalf of a user requires substantial confidence in Microsoft’s safeguards. The company seems aware of the potential risks and has built multiple protective layers to address them. 

The feature is currently available only in experimental mode through the Windows Insider Program for pre-release users. It remains disabled by default until manually turned on from Settings > System > AI components > Agent tools by activating the “Experimental agentic features” option. 

To maintain strict oversight, only digitally signed agents from trusted sources can integrate with Windows. This allows Microsoft to revoke or block malicious agents if needed. Furthermore, Copilot Actions operates within a separate standard account created when the feature is enabled. By default, the AI can only access known folders such as Documents, Downloads, Desktop, and Pictures, and requires explicit user permission to reach other locations. 

These interactions occur inside a controlled Agent workspace, isolated from the user’s desktop, much like Windows Sandbox. According to Dana Huang, Corporate Vice President of Windows Security, each AI agent begins with limited permissions, gains access only to explicitly approved resources, and cannot modify the system without user consent. 

Adding to this, Microsoft’s Peter Waxman confirmed in an interview that the company’s security team is actively “red-teaming” the feature — conducting simulated attacks to identify vulnerabilities. While he did not disclose test details, Microsoft noted that more granular privacy and security controls will roll out during the experimental phase before the feature’s public release. 

Even with these assurances, skepticism remains. The security research community — known for its vigilance and caution — will undoubtedly test whether Microsoft’s new agentic AI model can truly deliver on its promise of safety and transparency. As the preview continues, users and experts alike will be watching closely to see whether Copilot Actions earns their trust.

Gravy Analytics, the parent company of data broker Venntel, is facing mounting scrutiny after hackers reportedly infiltrated its systems, accessing an alarming 17 terabytes of sensitive consumer data. This breach includes detailed cellphone behavior and location data of U.S. consumers, sparking serious privacy and security concerns.

FTC Lawsuit Over Privacy Violations

In December, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit against Gravy Analytics, accusing the company of harvesting sensitive location and behavioral data without obtaining proper consumer consent. This legal action highlights the growing concerns over data brokers' unchecked collection and distribution of personal information.

Details of the Breach

The recent hack, first reported by 404 Media, exposed vast troves of data revealing intricate location patterns of U.S. citizens. Key aspects of the breach include:
  • Data Volume: Approximately 17 terabytes of location and behavior data were compromised.
  • Scope of Data: Includes detailed movement patterns collected from smartphones via apps and advertising networks.
  • Potential Impact: Raises severe risks of deanonymization and tracking of high-risk individuals.

Industry-Wide Privacy Concerns

For years, data brokers like Gravy Analytics have collected smartphone location data and sold it to various buyers, including U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the military. This practice allows agencies to bypass warrant requirements, raising constitutional and ethical concerns.

Cybersecurity expert Zach Edwards, a senior threat analyst at Silent Push, stressed the severity of this breach:

“A location data broker like Gravy Analytics getting hacked is the nightmare scenario all privacy advocates have feared and warned about. The potential harms for individuals are haunting. If all the bulk location data of Americans ends up being sold on underground markets, this will create countless deanonymization risks and tracking concerns for high-risk individuals and organizations. This may be the first major breach of a bulk location data provider, but it won’t be the last.”

A Troubled Industry with a History of Breaches

The data broker industry has long been criticized for its lack of regulation, excessive data collection, and weak security measures. Past incidents include:
  • Military and Intelligence Data for Sale: Investigations by Wired exposed how easily U.S. military and intelligence officer movement data could be purchased.
  • Abortion Clinic Data Leak: Brokers sold sensitive location data of abortion clinic visitors to activist groups.
  • Massive Identity Leak: Another broker exposed the social security numbers of 270 million Americans.

"We have heard a clear signal that we can make it easier for people to choose to enable Recall on their Copilot+ PC and improve privacy and security safeguards," said Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows and Devices, in a blog post on Friday. The company is banking on artificial intelligence (AI) to drive demand for its devices. Executive vice president Yusuf Medhi, during the event's keynote speech, likened the feature to having photographic memory, saying it used AI "to make it possible to access virtually anything you have ever seen on your PC." 

The feature can search through a user's past activity, including files, photos, emails, and browsing history. While many devices offer similar functionalities, Recall's unique aspect was its ability to take screenshots every few seconds and search these too. Microsoft claimed it "built privacy into Recall’s design" from the beginning, allowing users control over what was captured—such as opting out of capturing certain websites or not capturing private browsing on Microsoft’s browser, Edge. Despite these assurances, the company has now adjusted the feature to address privacy concerns. 

Changes will include making Recall an opt-in feature during the PC setup process, meaning it will be turned off by default. Users will also need to use Windows' "Hello" authentication process to enable the tool, ensuring that only authorized individuals can view or search their timeline of saved activity. Additionally, "proof of presence" will be required to access or search through the saved activity in Recall. These updates are set to be implemented before the launch of Copilot+ PCs on June 18. The adjustments aim to provide users with a clearer choice and enhanced control over their data, addressing the potential privacy risks associated with the feature.

The ransomware attack has caused extensive service interruptions. The library's main website is back online, and some digital services, such as Hoopla, are accessible. Hoopla allows library cardholders to remotely borrow audiobooks, movies, music, and other media. However, several essential services are still offline, including e-book access, the loaning system for physical items, Wi-Fi connectivity within library branches, printing services, and public computer usage. 

The library has reverted to manual processes to continue serving its patrons. Librarians are using paper forms to check out physical books, CDs, and DVDs, ensuring that patrons can still access these materials despite the digital outage. In the case of SPL, the specific details of the ransomware attack, including how the library's systems were compromised and whether any data was stolen or accessed, have not been disclosed. The library has prioritized investigating the extent of the breach and restoring services. The SPL has reassured its patrons that the privacy and security of their information are top priorities. 

In a public statement, the library acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the service disruptions and emphasized its commitment to resolving the issue swiftly. "Privacy and security of patron and employee information are top priorities," the library stated. "We are an organization that prides itself on providing you answers, and we are sorry that the information we can share is limited." The incident underscores the growing threat that ransomware poses to public institutions. Recall works by capturing screenshots of the active window every few seconds, recording user activity for up to three months. These snapshots are analyzed by an on-device Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and AI models to extract and index data, which users can search through using natural language queries. Microsoft assures that this data is encrypted with BitLocker and stored locally, not shared with other users on the device.

Despite Microsoft's assurances, the Recall feature has sparked immediate concerns about privacy and data security. Critics worry about the extensive data collection, as the feature records everything on the screen, potentially including sensitive information like passwords and private documents. Although Microsoft claims all data remains on the user’s device and is encrypted, the possibility of misuse remains a significant concern.

Microsoft emphasizes user control over the Recall feature, allowing users to decide what apps can be screenshotted and to pause or delete snapshots as needed. The company also stated that the feature would not capture content from Microsoft Edge’s InPrivate windows or other DRM-protected content. However, it remains unclear if similar protections will apply to other browsers' private modes, such as Firefox.

Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, assured journalists that the Recall index remains private, local, and secure. He reiterated that the data would not be used to train AI models and that users have complete control over editing and deleting captured data. Furthermore, Microsoft confirmed that Recall data would not be stored in the cloud, addressing concerns about remote data access.

Despite these reassurances, cybersecurity experts and users remain skeptical. Past instances of data exploitation by large companies have eroded trust, making users wary of Microsoft’s claims. The UK’s Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has also sought clarification from Microsoft to ensure user data protection.

Microsoft admits that Recall does not perform content moderation, raising significant security concerns. Anything visible on the screen, including sensitive information, could be recorded and indexed. If a device is compromised, this data could be accessible to threat actors, potentially leading to extortion or further breaches.

Cybersecurity expert Kevin Beaumont likened the feature to a keylogger integrated into Windows, expressing concerns about the expanded attack surface. Historically, infostealer malware targets databases stored locally, and the Recall feature's data could become a prime target for such malware.

Given Microsoft’s role in handling consumer data and computing security, introducing a feature that could increase risk seems irresponsible to some experts. While Microsoft claims to prioritize security, the introduction of Recall could complicate this commitment.

In a pledge to prioritize security, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated, "If you're faced with the tradeoff between security and another priority, your answer is clear: Do security." This statement underscores the importance of security over new features, emphasizing the need to protect customers' digital estates and build a safer digital world.

While the Recall feature aims to enhance user experience, its potential privacy risks and security implications necessitate careful consideration and robust safeguards to ensure user data protection.

Contemporary automobiles are brimming with cutting-edge technological features catering to the preferences of potential car buyers, ranging from proprietary operating systems to navigation aids and remote unlocking capabilities.

Drury highlighted that many of these advancements rely on data, whether sourced from the car's built-in computer or through GPS services connected to the vehicle.

It reveals that most new vehicles collect diverse sets of user data, which they often share and sell. Approximately 84% of the assessed brands share personal data with undisclosed third parties, while 76% admit to selling customer data.

Only two brands, Renault and Dacia, currently offer users the option to delete their personal data, as per Mozilla's findings. Theresa Payton, founder and CEO of Fortalice Solutions, a cybersecurity advisory firm, likened the current scenario to the "Wild, Wild West" of data collection, emphasizing the challenges faced by consumers in balancing budgetary constraints with privacy concerns.

Tom McParland, a contributor to automotive website Jalopnik, pointed out that data collected by cars may not differ significantly from that shared by smartphones. He noted that users often unknowingly relinquish vast amounts of personal data through their mobile devices.

Despite the challenges, experts suggest three steps for consumers to navigate the complexities of data privacy when considering new car purchases. Firstly, they recommend inquiring about data privacy policies at the dealership. Potential buyers should seek clarification on a manufacturer's data collection practices and inquire about options to opt in or out of data collection, aggregation, and monetization.

Furthermore, consumers should explore the possibility of anonymizing their data to prevent personal identification. Drury advised consulting with service managers at the dealership for deeper insights, as they are often more familiar with technical aspects than salespersons.

Attempts to remove a car's internet connectivity device, as demonstrated in a recent episode of The New York Times' podcast "The Daily," may not effectively safeguard privacy. McParland cautioned against such actions, emphasizing the integration of modern car systems, which could compromise safety features and functionality.

While older, used cars offer an alternative without high-tech features, McParland warned of potential risks associated with aging vehicles. Payton highlighted the importance of finding a balance between risk and reward, as disabling the onboard computer could lead to missing out on crucial safety features.
