AnMed Health Ransomware Attack Highlights Growing Patient Safety Risks in Healthcare

 

AnMed Health is the latest healthcare organization to be disrupted by a ransomware-related cybersecurity incident after having to cancel procedures and appointments while transitioning to paper-based operations. AnMed’s healthcare network was impacted by the ransomware attack, which led to the closure of some offices and the diversion of patients while administrators work to bring operations back online. 

AnMed closed its offices on Monday and reopened them on Tuesday under downtime procedures as employees use paper-based records and other manual processes to continue providing care. In the meantime, the healthcare organization has been using transfers, diversions and triage to manage the impact on operations while cybersecurity experts work to secure its systems. This incident serves as yet another reminder that ransomware-related cybersecurity incidents can disrupt the critical operations of healthcare organizations long after the initial financial and technological repercussions. 

Without access to electronic health records and other digital applications, clinicians may find it much harder to access patient health information or make timely decisions, which increases the likelihood of diagnostic and treatment errors. A similar consequence can also be observed in pharmacies, where the inability to access digital databases and communication platforms can cause delays in dispensing medication. 

AnMed has opened phone lines for patients to request prescription refills while its normal operations are suspended, and it has asked patients to rely on its online portal for more information about the closure. AnMed has revealed limited information about the ransomware incident, confirming that it is a cyber security incident involving malicious software while noting that it is working with federal and state officials to secure its network and resume normal operations. 

The healthcare organization has not commented on how the ransomware infiltrated its system or if patient data was compromised or encrypted. The ransomware attack comes at a time when healthcare organizations are being targeted with unprecedented cybersecurity aggression worldwide. Cybercriminals are increasingly using ransomware to interrupt the critical operations of healthcare organizations by encrypting or stealing patient data and threatening to make the information public unless a ransom is paid. 

Threat actors typically infiltrate healthcare systems through phishing attacks, compromised credentials, insecure remote access tools, or system vulnerabilities before deploying ransomware or encrypting data to demand payment of a ransom. Healthcare systems and organizations can be especially vulnerable to such an incident, considering the fact that they cannot halt their operations to mitigate the ransomware attack or contain it while working to restore normal operations. Hospitals and clinics typically rely on interconnected systems that facilitate the exchange of patient health information and other operations, including scheduling, laboratory tests, pharmacy operations, billing and communication platforms.

All these systems and applications can be disrupted during a ransomware attack, forcing medical professionals to rely on manual, paper-based alternatives. Cybersecurity experts typically recommend multifactor authentication, regular software updates, network segmentation, monitoring, security awareness training and offline backups to secure interconnected systems and ensure business continuity following a ransomware attack. 

However, those measures cannot offer absolute protection, which means that organizations need to respond appropriately to ransomware incidents while strengthening their defenses. It is increasingly evident that ransomware incidents are no longer just technology issues but also patient safety ones.

That is why healthcare organizations should focus on responding to ransomware incidents by identifying the point of infiltration and ransomware type, isolating affected systems and applications, determining if any patient data was compromised, and taking appropriate mitigation steps.

Third-Party Cloud Breach Exposes Patient Data at Amgen


 

The global biotechnology company Amgen has disclosed a significant data breach resulting from unauthorized access to cloud environments operated by third-party service providers, leading to the theft of sensitive patient and corporate information. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the pharmaceutical company, based in California, discovered the incident in July 2026 and initiated its cybersecurity incident response process immediately. 

Several containment measures were implemented by the company and independent forensic experts were engaged in an investigation into the breach. As a result of assessing the volume of files that appeared affected and determining that the compromised data could contain sensitive information, Amgen formally classified the incident as material on July 29, 2017. 

As part of the legal requirement to inform investors of significant cybersecurity incidents, the company made the disclosure in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined that hackers successfully exfiltrated data from a number of cloud-based systems. 

In addition to proprietary corporate data, protected health information (PHI) belonging to patients, and other sensitive records, this information has been compromised. Despite not identifying the vendors involved or revealing how the attackers gained access to the stolen data, Amgen claims that the stolen data originated from cloud storage environments managed by third-party service providers. Additionally, Amgen is assessing whether confidential business information, intellectual property, research and development data, and additional patient information was compromised. 

During the ongoing forensic investigation, the company is continuing to determine if patient records, confidential business information, intellectual property, research and development data, or other sensitive information was accessed or stolen during the incident. 

Upon completion of the forensic investigation, the full scope of the compromise is anticipated. There has been no disclosure by the company as to identification of the third-party cloud providers, attack vectors used by threat actors, or number of individuals affected. No known cybercriminal organization has been attributed to the incident.

Following an evaluation of the number of potentially affected files and the likelihood that they contained highly sensitive information, Amgen determined that the breach was material on July 29. Even though the breach is serious, the company stated that it does not anticipate that the breach will adversely affect its financial condition or operating results in the near future. 

In addition to the assistance of external cybersecurity experts, the investigation is currently ongoing. Considering its legal and regulatory obligations, Amgen stated that it would notify affected patients where required under applicable data protection laws. According to Amgen's current assessment, the cybersecurity incident has not adversely affected its products, manufacturing operations, financial reporting systems, or its ability to continue supplying medicines and meeting the needs of patients. 

There has been an increase in cyberattacks targeting healthcare and pharmaceutical organizations, whose cloud-hosted patient records and valuable research data have made these organizations attractive targets for cybercriminals. In addition to highlighting the increasing cybersecurity risks associated with third-party cloud infrastructure, the incident highlights the importance of securing sensitive healthcare data throughout the supply chain as a whole. 

Amgen stated its response was to activate its cybersecurity incident response plan immediately after detecting the unauthorized activity, implement containment measures in order to limit exposure, and continue to work with independent forensic experts to determine the extent and impact of the incident. There has been an increase in cybersecurity incidents impacting the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors in recent months. 

The breach is another in a string of recent cybersecurity incidents. The industry has also experienced numerous cyber incidents, including Abbott Laboratories, Clover Health, Stryker, Medtronic, Novo Nordisk, and West Pharmaceutical Services, which illustrates the increasing vulnerability of medical and corporate data to cyberattacks. 

Amgen has not yet disclosed whether it has received any extortion demands or whether the attackers have attempted to take advantage of the stolen data for ransom or another malicious purpose. It is anticipated that additional details will be released once the forensic investigation has been completed.

Abbott Investigates Two Cyber Incidents Following Extortion Claims


 

Two separate cybersecurity incidents are being investigated by Abbott Laboratories after threat actors reportedly gained access to the company's systems and accessed sensitive information. While one incident has been linked to the ShinyHunters extortion group, the other involves claims of unauthorized access to Abbott's LabCentral customer portal. The company said both incidents are being investigated, and operations have not been disrupted. 

Both incidents have not adversely affected Abbott's business operations, manufacturing, laboratory services, product availability, or customer support. According to the company, the unauthorized access was restricted to systems that operate independently of Abbott's core infrastructure within its Cancer Diagnostics business, with no impact reported across other business units or sites due to the unauthorized access discovered. 

Several legacy Exact Sciences systems were discovered to have been accessed unauthorizedly by Abbott's Cancer Diagnostics business. As a consequence of the ShinyHunters extortion group listing the company on its data leak site, Abbott confirmed the breach, and threatened to publish allegedly stolen information if negotiations were not held. Exact Sciences is part of Abbott's Cancer Diagnostics division, which the company acquired earlier this year for $21 billion. 

Aside from Abbott's core systems, Exact Sciences' legacy infrastructure operates separately, which limits the scope of the incident. According to Abbott, the incident is isolated to the Cancer Diagnostics division and has not affected manufacturing, laboratory operations, product availability, patient services, or any other Abbott business systems.

A notification was sent to law enforcement, the company activated its incident response procedures, and external cybersecurity experts were engaged. In addition, Abbott stated that the incident will not negatively affect its financial performance. In response to the incident, Abbott has not provided information regarding the type of information that was accessed, noting that its investigation is ongoing. 

The company claims to have gained initial access to a Microsoft Entra single sign-on (SSO) account by launching a voice phishing (vishing) attack targeting Abbott employees in mid-June. A number of enterprise platforms, including Microsoft Entra, ServiceNow, SharePoint, Databricks, and Coupa, were accessed by the group, which alleges that internal documents, contracts, customer information, and millions of medical records containing personally identifiable information (PII) have been exfiltrated. 

These claims have not been independently verified, however. Separately, a threat actor claiming the name ShadowByt3$ has been associated with the breach of Abbott's Core Laboratory Diagnostics business by exploiting compromised customer credentials by accessing the LabCentral customer portal hosted by a third party. It has been claimed that the attacker has obtained technical documentation, manufacturing certificates, regulatory files, and other product-related information. 

LabCentral was investigated by Abbott, but the attacker's claims were disputed, as the portal only contains publicly available technical reference materials such as operating manuals, troubleshooting guides, and product specifications. The company indicated that confidential business information and sensitive customer information are not included in the environment. 

In the LabCentral portal, Abbott explained that it is hosted by a third party provider and serves as a repository of publicly available technical reference documents, including operating instructions, troubleshooting guides, and product specifications. In accordance with the company, sensitive customer information or proprietary business data is not known to have been compromised as a result of the reported incident. 

There has been a growing trend of cyberattacks targeting healthcare and medical technology over the past few years. In recent months, a number of companies, including Clover Health, Stryker, Medtronic, Novo Nordisk, and West Pharmaceutical Services, have reported cybersecurity incidents, illustrating the increasing risks associated with handling patient and healthcare-sensitive data. Several cyber-incidents have occurred in the medical technology sector in recent months, causing significant damage to the industry. 

A number of companies, including Stryker, Medtronic, Intuitive Surgical, iRhythm, and AdaptHealth, have reported cybersecurity incidents as well, underscoring the growing threat landscape for healthcare and medtech organizations. As of yet, neither ShinyHunters nor ShadowByt3$ has disclosed the data that they claim to have stolen. In addition to engaging external cybersecurity experts and notifying law enforcement, Abbott has also continued to investigate the possibility of access to any potentially sensitive information.

In addition, Abbott stated that it does not anticipate either incident to negatively impact its business or financial results. Abbott's ongoing investigations highlight the increasing cybersecurity challenges in the healthcare and medical technologies industries. 

However, despite the company's assurances that operations remain unaffected and that no sensitive customer information has been exposed, the incidents demonstrate how important it is to take quick action, to use robust security measures, and to continuously monitor against cyber threats as they evolve.

Romania’s Hospital Cyberattack Highlights Growing Ransomware Threats to Healthcare Systems

 

A large-scale ransomware attack that took place in the healthcare system of Romania in February 2024 makes for textbook material on how to respond to such incidents, as well as the challenges they present. The ransomware attack scenario started when criminals got hold of a hospital management system called Hippocrates and, using it as a vector, distributed BackMyData ransomware to encrypt data. 

One of the software’s main functions is processing and storing information on laboratory results, pharmacy claims, payroll, admission and discharge of patients, doctors, and other medical staff. After being locked, the hospitals had to pay nearly 160 thousand euros to decrypt the data, which is in Bitcoin. When some hospitals reported the ransomware attack, the National Computer Security Center (DNSC) took an extraordinary measure to order over a hundred facilities to disconnect from the internet to prevent the virus from spreading to other institutions. 

Consequently, the hospitals’ systems became unable to provide access to email, the Internet, and interconnected medical devices. To manage patients and keep the critical functions running, doctors and nurses used paper-based solutions to write down and manually input lab results, physician orders, and treatment plans. In parallel, hospital staff worked on taking down the ransomware and securing the system. 

Authorities eventually found out that the ransomware infection was confirmed in 26 hospitals, where the ransomware attack response team with the help of the system supplier isolated the contaminated systems from the network. After decrypting files and securing the system, the technicians returned the hospitals to the network and ensured there were no other problems. 

Throughout the ransomware incident, authorities provided the public with updates on the ransomware situation, telling the people to avoid visiting the facilities if possible and advising the hospitals not to give in to the attackers’ demands. Nevertheless, the response to the challenge was far from perfect, as Romania continues to face challenges with cybercrime. The patients complained about the inconvenience of standing in queues and having their tests processed manually, but the government did not go through with paying off the ransom. 

At the same time, it is worth noting that having up-to-date data backups allowed the hospitals to quickly restore their vital functions without having to wait for decrypting tools from hackers. Five days after the ransomware attack, most of the affected facilities had already returned to normal operations. At the same time, there were no reports of patient deaths or damage to health caused by the ransomware attack. Still, doctors and nurses had to manually enter a lot of the patient’s personal data, which took them several more weeks to finish, while some of the relevant information was lost altogether. 

So far, the ones behind the ransomware attack have not been revealed. Still, it has been reported that some of the suspects’ resources in Russia have been shut down by the police, while others are currently detained abroad. It is not yet known whether they will be brought to justice in Romania. The ransomware attack on the healthcare system of Romania serves as a reminder of how fragile our systems are and the importance of protecting them. 

In many ways, hospitals are a critical infrastructure component, meaning that potential attackers will always attempt to take advantage of them by holding vital functions hostage until they get a hefty ransom. Even though the ransomware response team handled the situation in Romania efficiently, the ransomware incidents in the UK and the US show that problems of that sort are far from being exclusive to Romania.

Medtronic Alerts Customers After Data Breach Exposes Personal Information

 

Healthcare technology company Medtronic has started informing affected customers about a cybersecurity incident that resulted in unauthorized access to their personal information.

The company had earlier disclosed that its corporate IT infrastructure had been compromised by hackers. The cyber extortion group ShinyHunters later claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging it had obtained around 9 million records containing personally identifiable information (PII) and internal corporate data.

According to the notification shared by the company, “On April 15, 2026, Medtronic became aware of unusual activity on certain corporate IT systems.”

The notice further states, “Medtronic launched an investigation with the assistance of leading third-party cybersecurity experts to determine the impact and scope of the incident.”

Following the investigation, the company concluded that “The investigation determined that from April 13 to April 19, 2026, an unauthorized actor accessed certain Medtronic corporate IT systems.”

The information that may have been exposed includes:

  • Full name

  • Contact information

  • Date of birth

  • Social Security number

  • Health-related information

ShinyHunters is known for publishing stolen information when ransom demands are not met. The group reportedly added Medtronic to its dark web leak site on April 18, claiming it possessed more than 9 million records and warning that the data would be released if a ransom was not paid by April 21.

However, the listing disappeared from the group's portal later that month. In its customer notification, Medtronic clarified that the compromised data has not been made publicly available online.

Medtronic operates in over 150 countries and employs approximately 95,000 people, generating annual revenue of around $33.5 billion.

Despite the breach involving customer information, the company has reassured users that its medical devices continue to operate safely and were not impacted by the cybersecurity incident.

Customers receiving breach notifications are being encouraged to enroll in the company's complimentary 24-month credit monitoring and identity theft protection program to reduce potential risks.

The company has also advised affected individuals to stay alert for suspicious emails, messages, or calls that could exploit the exposed information for phishing, social engineering, or other fraudulent activities. Customers are also encouraged to regularly review their account activity for any signs of unauthorized access.

Romania's Swift Response Stops Massive Cyberattack on Hospitals, Offers Global Lessons in Healthcare Security

 

Romania's healthcare system faced one of its biggest cyber crises in February 2024 when a widespread ransomware attack targeted hospitals across the country, disrupting critical medical services and exposing the growing vulnerability of healthcare infrastructure to cybercriminals.

The attack began when hackers infiltrated the systems of Bucharest-based software company RSC, compromising its widely used hospital management platform, Hippocrates. As the malicious software rapidly spread to connected hospitals, officials at Romania's National Directorate for Cyber Security (DNSC) realized immediate action was necessary to prevent a nationwide catastrophe.

Faced with limited options, DNSC Director Dan Cimpean instructed more than 100 hospitals to disconnect from the internet immediately. The drastic measure successfully halted the spread of the ransomware but also left hospitals without internet access, email services, and connected medical systems.

Medical staff were forced to abandon digital records and return to manual processes, relying on handwritten documentation and paper-based workflows while cybersecurity experts investigated the breach and IT teams worked to restore operations.

The incident has since become an important case study for disaster response planners worldwide, demonstrating how healthcare systems can continue functioning during a major cyberattack.

Surgeon Oana Goidescu, who was working at Buzău Hospital when the attack unfolded, described the challenges medical staff faced.

"It was quite an unpleasant experience, because an IT record is not just a list of patients." She explained the extent of the disruption by adding: "For each patient, we request lab tests, radiology, medicines and supplies. All of that was gone."

The Hippocrates platform plays a central role in hospital operations, handling patient admissions, laboratory requests, pharmacy logistics, payroll, medical records, and diagnostic results. Once compromised, hospitals across Romania experienced widespread service failures.

The ransomware used in the attack, known as BackMyData, encrypted hospital files and demanded payment in Bitcoin to restore access.

The first warning signs appeared at Pitești Children's Hospital on the morning following the breach. By the next day, numerous hospitals reported that their Hippocrates systems had stopped functioning.

Cybersecurity specialists collaborated closely with the software provider to identify infected systems, isolate the malware, and begin recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, hospitals developed temporary offline systems to continue treating patients.

Vlad Paic from Carol Davila Hospital explained how his team adapted. When we saw the system would not be repaired quickly, we developed an offline method so we could register every patient. He added:"We asked the laboratory to give us results on paper. We used Excel and other offline tools to ensure care was not affected."

Romania's relatively recent transition to digital healthcare systems proved somewhat beneficial, as many staff members were still familiar with traditional paper-based procedures.

Investigators later confirmed that 26 hospitals had been directly infected with the BackMyData ransomware. Unaffected hospitals were gradually reconnected to the internet after additional cybersecurity protections were implemented.

Authorities also relied heavily on public communication throughout the crisis. Patients were advised to avoid hospitals unless absolutely necessary, helping reduce pressure on already strained facilities.

Despite these efforts, medical staff often faced frustration from worried patients.

Goidescu recalled: "We were asked, 'What if it were your mother?' They were right to be angry, but we tried to explain we were not at fault."

Romanian authorities also issued clear instructions that hospitals should neither negotiate with the attackers nor pay the ransom. The hackers had demanded €160,000 in Bitcoin, but the government refused payment and instead focused on restoring systems through secure backups.

Regular data backups proved invaluable, allowing most hospitals to recover their systems within five days. Although no deaths or serious patient harm were reported during the incident, healthcare workers spent weeks manually entering records created during the outage, while some information was permanently lost.

Investigators have not publicly identified those responsible for the attack. However, authorities previously dismantled a ransomware group linked to BackMyData in an international law enforcement operation that resulted in the arrest of four Russian nationals outside Russia.

Reflecting on the incident, Dan Cimpean warned that no country is immune from similar threats. "The more technology you have, the more digitised you are, the greater the risk."

The Romanian cyberattack reflects a broader global trend. In the United Kingdom, a cyberattack on an NHS blood-testing provider last year contributed to the first officially confirmed patient death linked to a cyber incident. In the United States, attacks on Change Healthcare and Ascension caused major disruptions, with Change Healthcare reportedly paying a $22 million ransom.

Cybersecurity experts say hospitals remain attractive targets because of their essential services.

Alina Bîzgă of cybersecurity company Bitdefender explained: "Hospitals handle critical services, and the criminals think that the more disruption that can be caused, the more likely they are to get paid a ransom."

The Romania incident highlights the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures, routine system backups, and well-prepared emergency response plans to safeguard healthcare services against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Stryker Cyberattack Disrupts Operations as Pro-Iran Hackers Allegedly Wipe Employee Devices

 

Medical technology leader Stryker has begun restoring its systems after a cyberattack that reportedly enabled pro-Iranian hackers to remotely erase data from tens of thousands of employee devices.

The incident caused significant operational disruption and is being viewed as potentially the first large-scale cyberattack in the United States linked to tensions surrounding the Donald Trump administration’s conflict with Iran.

In a weekend update, Stryker confirmed that the March 11 breach was limited to its internal Microsoft environment, emphasizing that its internet-connected medical devices are “safe to use.”

Although investigations into the root cause are ongoing, the company stated it has found no evidence of ransomware or malware involvement. However, disruptions to order processing, manufacturing, and shipping operations persist.

A pro-Iran hacking group known as Handala claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was retaliation for a U.S. airstrike on an Iranian school that reportedly killed at least 175 people, most of them children. The group also defaced Stryker’s login portals with its branding.

According to Bleeping Computer, the attackers may have gained entry through an internal administrator account, granting them extensive access to Stryker’s Windows network. Reports suggest the hackers accessed Microsoft Intune dashboards, a system used to manage employee devices remotely, including the ability to erase data if devices are lost or stolen.

A successful breach of these dashboards would have allowed attackers to remotely wipe both corporate and personal devices without deploying malware.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Intune systems were a primary target in the attack.

Stryker has not publicly responded to questions regarding the breach, including whether the compromised account was secured with multi-factor authentication.

The initial entry point for the attackers remains unclear. Researchers from Palo Alto Networks suggested phishing could have been used to infiltrate the network. IBM noted that Iran-linked groups like Handala are known for phishing campaigns and destructive cyber operations, particularly targeting healthcare and energy industries. Infostealer malware, which captures login credentials and sensitive data, may also have contributed to the breach.

Stryker employs approximately 56,000 people globally and operates across more than 60 countries, according to Reuters.

Royal Bahrain Hospital Faces Alleged Breach by Payload Ransomware


 

Several ransomware outfits have recently surfaced, claiming responsibility for significant breaches at Royal Bahrain Hospital, raising fresh concerns about healthcare cybersecurity. The group claims that it has penetrated the hospital’s digital infrastructure and exfiltrated a considerable amount of sensitive data using the name Payload.

The assertions of this nature, if verified, illustrate how vulnerable healthcare institutions are, since critical operations and highly confidential patient information are intertwined. As threat actors increasingly leverage reputational pressure by threatening the public disclosure of stolen information, they are not only seeking financial gain, but also seeking reputational gain. 

The incident is a reflection of an emerging trend in which ransomware groups are rapidly adopting sophisticated tactics in order to target essential service providers, posing considerable threats to operations continuity and data privacy. As a result of cyber threat intelligence and monitoring channels, the alleged intrusion has been discovered, further emphasizing ransomware operators' continued focus on healthcare infrastructure worldwide. 

The Royal Bahrain Hospital was established in 2011, and is a private medical facility with a capacity of 70 patients. It offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, including maternity care, surgery, and advanced diagnostics. 

In addition to serving a domestic patient base, the facility also serves patients from Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, positioning it within a system of cross-border medical care that continues to expand. These institutions have become increasingly attractive targets for financially motivated threat actors, primarily due to the criticality of uninterrupted clinical operations and the sensitive nature of patient data, which can increase the urgency with which incidents must be contained and normalcy restored. 

In the broader ransomware ecosystem, the emergence of new groups continues to reflect a highly competitive threat landscape that is continually evolving. It appears Payload, a relatively recent entrant to the market, employs a structured extortion model, which incorporates data exfiltration and system level encryption to maximize leverage. 

There has been a noticeable increase in the activity of the group across mid-sized to large-scale companies, particularly in sectors such as real estate and logistics, with an emphasis on organizations operating in high-growth markets or in developing countries. 

Technically, its ransomware framework includes ChaCha20 for file encryption and Curve25519 for secure key exchange, in addition to further security controls that are being implemented to inhibit recovery attempts, including the removal of shadow copies and interference with security controls. 

Further indicators indicate that ransomware-as-a-service may also be employed, with a Tor-based leak portal being used in a staged manner to pressure non-compliant victims. As per recent threat intelligence, the broader ransomware economy is also experiencing a period of transition.

Although ransomware remains a persistent and disruptive threat, several indicators suggest that profitability across the ecosystem is gradually decreasing. There is a growing reluctance among victims to pay ransom demands as a result of strengthened organizational defenses, improved incident recovery capabilities, and improved incident recovery capabilities. 

Furthermore, sustained law enforcement actions and internal fragmentation within cybercriminal networks have disrupted some previously dominant cybercriminal networks, contributing to the increase in competition and crowdedness among cybercriminals.

In spite of the increasing pressure on ransomware threat models, they continue to adapt in order to develop viable monetization strategies.

The available threat intelligence indicates that Payload targets medium- to large-scale organizations across emerging markets, including those operating in commercially active sectors such as real estate, logistics, and other related industries. 

There is a widespread belief that the group operates under a ransomware-as-a-service model, wherein core developers maintain and update the malware framework while affiliate operators execute attacks, generating revenue by sharing the proceeds. As a result of this approach, the group appears to maintain a Tor-based leak portal that is used for staged disclosure of exfiltrated data to exert pressure on noncompliance victims. 

It is apparent that Royal Bahrain Hospital's inclusion on this platform, along with purported screenshots of compromised systems, is intended to strengthen its claims, while simultaneously amplifying the reputational risk. Further, this incident reinforces existing concerns within the cybersecurity community concerning healthcare institutions' heightened vulnerability. Because hospitals rely on interconnected digital ecosystems for patient records, diagnostics, and operational workflows, they remain particularly vulnerable. These environments can be disrupted immediately and have immediate real-world implications, which threat actors often take advantage of in order to accelerate ransom negotiations. 

The group indicates that it holds a significant amount of allegedly stolen data in this case and has set a deadline for compliance of March 23 after which it threatens to disclose the data. To date, these claims have not been independently verified, and it is unclear to what extent they may have affected systems or data. As the situation develops, standard guidance emphasizes the need for detailed forensic investigations, evaluating the scope of the compromise, and reinforcing defensive controls.

Cybercriminals Report Monetizing Stolen Data From US Medical Company


Modern healthcare operations are frequently plagued by ransomware attacks, but the recent attack on Change Healthcare marks a major turning point in terms of scale and consequence. In the context of an industry that is increasingly relying on digital platforms, there is a growing threat environment characterized by organized cybercrime, fragile third-party dependency, and an increasing data footprint as a result of an increasingly hostile threat environment. 

With hundreds of ransomware incidents and broader security incidents already occurring in a matter of months, recent figures from 2025 illustrate just how serious this shift is. It is important to note that a breach will not only disrupt clinical and administrative workflows, but also put highly sensitive patient information at risk, which can result in cascading operational, financial, and legal consequences for organizations. 

The developments highlighted here highlight a stark reality: safeguarding healthcare data does not just require technical safeguards; it now requires a coordinated risk management strategy that anticipates breaches, limits their impacts, and ensures institutional resilience should prevention fail. 

Connecticut's Community Health Center (CHC) recently disclosed a significant data breach that occurred when an unauthorized access to its internal systems was allowed to result in a significant data breach, which exemplifies the sector's ongoing vulnerability to cyber risk. 

In January 2025, the organization was alerted to irregular network activity, resulting in an urgent forensic investigation that confirmed there was a criminal on site. Upon further analysis, it was found that the attacker had maintained undetected access to the system from mid-October 2024, thereby allowing a longer window for data exfiltration before the breach was contained and publicly disclosed later that month. 

There was no ransomware or disruption of operations during the incident, but the extent of the data accessed was significant, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance details, and clinical records of patients and employees, which included sensitive patient and employee information.

More than one million people, including several thousand employees, were affected according to CHC, demonstrating the difficulties that persist in early detection of threats and data protection across healthcare networks, and highlighting the urgent need for strengthened security measures as medical records continue to attract cybercriminals. 

According to Cytek Biosciences' notification to affected individuals, it was learned in early November 2025 that an outside party had gained access to portions of the Biotechnology company's systems and that the company later determined that personal information had been obtained by an outside party. 

As soon as the company became aware of the extent of the exposure, it took immediate steps to respond, including offering free identity theft protection and credit monitoring services for up to two years to eligible individuals, which the company said it had been working on. 

As part of efforts to mitigate potential harm resulting from the incident, enrollment in the program continues to be open up until the end of April 2026. Threat intelligence sources have identified the breach as being connected to Rhysida, which is known for being a ransomware group that first emerged in 2023 and has since established itself as a prolific operation within the cybercrime ecosystem.

A ransomware-as-a-service model is employed by the group which combines data theft with system encryption, as well as allowing affiliates to conduct attacks using its malware and infrastructure in return for a share of the revenue. 

The Rhysida malware has been responsible for a number of attacks across several sectors since its inception, and healthcare is one of the most frequent targets. Cyberattack Disrupts Belgian Hospital AZ Monica, Forces Server Shutdown and Patient Transfers

 

A cyber incident disrupted operations at Belgian hospital network AZ Monica, prompting the organization to shut down all servers, cancel planned medical procedures, and relocate critically ill patients. AZ Monica operates as a general hospital network with two campuses in Antwerp and Deurne, delivering acute, outpatient, and specialized healthcare services to the surrounding community.

The hospital took its systems offline at 6:32 a.m. on 13th January 2025 after identifying the cyberattack. While urgent care services remain active and current inpatients continue to receive treatment, non-essential consultations have been deferred because staff are unable to access electronic medical records.

“This morning (6:32 a.m.), AZ Monica experienced a serious disruption to its IT systems. As a precaution, all servers for the campuses in Deurne and Antwerp were proactively shut down.” reads a press statement published by the hospital. “Due to this situation, no scheduled surgeries are possible today . We have informed all patients. The Emergency Department is operating at reduced capacity . The MUG and PIT services are temporarily unavailable . Consultations continue. Visitors are always welcome.”

Following the incident, the healthcare organization initiated an internal investigation and informed law enforcement authorities, including police and prosecutors. With assistance from the Red Cross, AZ Monica safely transferred seven critical patients, while care for all remaining patients continues at the facility.

“Our emergency department is operating at low capacity. No patients are being transported to our emergency department by ambulance. Therefore, if you require urgent care, we ask that you contact your GP, a GP out-of-hours clinic, or another emergency service whenever possible.” reads a cyber incident update.

AZ Monica has not disclosed technical specifics about the attack. The Brussels Times cited unverified reports suggesting a ransom demand, though neither hospital officials nor authorities have confirmed these claims.

Hospital leadership reiterated that patient safety and the continuity of medical services remain their highest priorities. The situation is being closely monitored, and additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Over a Million Healthcare Devices Hit by Cyberattack

 


Despite the swell of cyberattacks changing the global threat landscape, Indian healthcare has become one of the most vulnerable targets as a result of these cyberattacks. There are currently 8,614 cyberattacks per week on healthcare institutions in the country, a figure that is more than four times the global average and nearly twice that of any other industry in the country. 

In addition to the immense value that patient data possesses and the difficulties in safeguarding sprawling healthcare networks, the relentless targeting of patients reflects the challenges that healthcare providers continue to face healthcare providers. With the emergence of sophisticated hacktivist operations, ransomware, hacking attacks, and large-scale data theft, these breaches are becoming more sophisticated and are not simply disruptions. 

The cybercriminal business is rapidly moving from traditional encryption-based extortion to aggressive methods of "double extortion" that involve stealing and then encrypting data, or in some cases abandoning encryption altogether in order to concentrate exclusively on exfiltrating data. This evolution can be seen in groups like Hunters International, recently rebranded as World Leaks, that are exploiting a declining ransom payment system and thriving underground market for stolen data to exploit its gains. 

A breach in the Healthcare Delivery Organisations' system risks exposing vast amounts of personal and medical information, which underscores why the sector remains a target for hackers today, as it is one of the most attractive sectors for attackers, and is also continually targeted by them. Modat, a cybersecurity firm that uncovered 1.2 million internet-connected medical systems that are misconfigured and exposed online in August 2025, is a separate revelation that emphasises the sector's vulnerabilities. 

Several critical devices in the system were available, including imaging scanners, X-ray machines, DICOM viewers, laboratory testing platforms, and hospital management systems, all of which could be accessed by an attacker. Experts warned that the exposure posed a direct threat to patient safety, in addition to posing a direct threat to privacy. 

In Modat's investigation, sensitive data categories, including highly detailed medical imaging, such as brain scans, lung MRIs, and dental X-rays, were uncovered, along with clinical documentation, complete medical histories and complete medical records. Personal information, including names, addresses and contact details, as well as blood test results, biometrics, and treatment records, all of which can be used to identify the individual.

A significant amount of information was exposed in an era of intensifying cyber threats, which highlights the profound consequences of poorly configured healthcare infrastructure. There has been an increasing number of breaches that illustrate the magnitude of the problem. BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware group has claimed responsibility for a devastating attack on Change Healthcare, where Optum, the parent company of UnitedHealth Group, has reportedly paid $22 million in ransom in exchange for the promise of deleting stolen data.

There was a twist in the crime ecosystem when BlackCat abruptly shut down, retaining none of the payments, but sending the data to an affiliate of the RansomHub ransomware group, which demanded a second ransom for the data in an attempt to secure payment. No second payment was received, and the breach grew in magnitude as each disclosure was made. Initially logged with the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) officials had initially estimated that the infection affected 500 people, but by July 2025, it had reached 100 million, then 190 million, and finally 192.7 million individuals.

These staggering figures highlight why healthcare remains a prime target for ransomware operators: if critical hospital systems fail to function correctly, downtime threatens not only revenue and reputations, but the lives of patients as well. Several other vulnerabilities compound the risk, including ransomware, since medical IoT devices are already vulnerable to compromise, which poses a threat to life-sustaining systems like heart monitors and infusion pumps. 

Telehealth platforms, on the other hand, extend the attack surface by routing sensitive consultations over the internet, thereby increasing the scope of potential attacks. In India, these global pressures are matched by local challenges, including outdated legacy systems, a lack of cybersecurity expertise, and a still-developing regulatory framework. 

Healthcare providers rely on a patchwork of frameworks in order to protect themselves from cybersecurity threats since there is no unified national healthcare cybersecurity law, including the Information Technology Act, SPDI Rules, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which has not been enforced yet.

In their view, this lack of cohesion leaves organisations ill-equipped for future threats, particularly smaller companies with limited budgets and under-resourced security departments. In order to address these gaps, there is a partnership between the Data Security Council of India and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) that aims to conduct a national cybersecurity assessment. As a result of the number of potentially exposed pieces of information that were uncovered as a result of the Serviceaide breach, it was particularly troubling. 

Depending on the individual, the data could include information such as their name, Social Security number, birth date, medical records, insurance details, prescription and treatment information, clinical notes, provider identifications, email usernames, and passwords. This information would vary by individual. As a response, Serviceaide announced that it had strengthened its security controls and was offering 12 months of complimentary credit and identity monitoring to affected individuals. 

There was an incident at Catholic Health that resulted in the disclosure that limited patient data was exposed by one of its vendors. According to the organisation's website, a formal notification letter is now being sent to potentially affected patients, and a link to the Serviceaide notice can be found on the website. No response has been received from either organisation regarding further information. 

While regulatory authorities and courts have shown little leniency in similar cases, in 2019, Puerto Rico-based Inmediata Health Group was fined $250,000 by the HHS' Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and later settled a lawsuit for more than $2.5 million with the state attorneys general and class actions plaintiffs after a misconfiguration resulted in 1.6 million patient records being exposed. As recently as last week, OCR penalised Vision Upright MRI, a small California imaging provider, for leaving medical images, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, available online through an unsecured PACS server. 

A $5,000 fine and an action plan were awarded in this case, making the agency's 14th HIPAA enforcement action in 2025. The cumulative effect of these precedents illustrates that failing to secure patient information can lead to significant financial, regulatory, and reputational consequences for healthcare organisations. It has become increasingly evident that the regulatory consequences of failing to safeguard patient data are increasing as time goes on. 

Specifically, under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), fines can rise to millions of dollars for prolonged violations of the law, and systemic non-compliance with the law can result. For healthcare organisations, adhering to the regulations is both a financial and ethical imperative. 

Data from the U.S. As shown by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR), enforcement activity has been steadily increasing over the past decade, with the year 2022 marking a record number of penalties imposed. OCR's Right of Access Initiative, launched in 2019, aims to curb providers who fail to provide patients with timely access to their medical records in a timely manner. 

It has contributed a great deal to the increase in penalties. There were 46 penalties issued for such violations between September 2019 and December 2023 as a result of enforcement activity. Enforcement activity continued high in 2024, as OCR closed 22 investigations with fines, even though only 16 of those were formally announced during that year. The momentum continues into 2025, bolstered by an increased enforcement focus on the HIPAA Security Rule's risk analysis provision, traditionally the most common cause of noncompliance. 

 Almost ten investigations have already been closed by OCR with financial penalties due to risk analysis failures as of May 31, 2025, indicating the agency's sharpened effort to reduce the backlog of data breach cases while holding covered entities accountable for their failures. It is a stark reminder that the healthcare sector stands at a crossroads between technology, patient care, and national security right now as a result of the increasing wave of cyberattacks that have been perpetrated against healthcare organisations. 

 Hospitals and medical networks are increasingly becoming increasingly dependent on the use of digital technologies, which means every exposed database, misconfigured system, or compromised vendor creates a greater opportunity for adversaries with ever greater resources, organisation, and determination to attack them. In the absence of decisive investments in cybersecurity infrastructure, workforce training, and stronger regulatory frameworks, experts warn that breaches will not only persist but will intensify in the future. 

A growing digitisation of healthcare in India makes the stakes even higher: the ability to preserve patient trust, ensure continuity of care, and safeguard sensitive health data is what will determine if digital innovation becomes a valuable asset or a liability, particularly in this country. In the big picture, it is also obvious that cybersecurity is no longer a technical afterthought but has evolved into a pillar of healthcare resilience, where failure has a cost that goes far beyond fines and penalties, and concerns involving patient safety as well as the lives of people involved.

UnitedHealth Confirms Change Healthcare Cyberattack Impacted 190 Million People

 

UnitedHealth Group has officially disclosed that the February ransomware attack on its subsidiary, Change Healthcare, affected approximately 190 million individuals in the U.S.—nearly twice the previously estimated figure.

The healthcare giant confirmed the revised number in a statement to TechCrunch on Friday, after market hours.

“Change Healthcare has determined the estimated total number of individuals impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack is approximately 190 million,” said Tyler Mason, a UnitedHealth spokesperson, in an email to TechCrunch. “The vast majority of those people have already been provided individual or substitute notice. The final number will be confirmed and filed with the Office for Civil Rights at a later date.”

UnitedHealth also stated that there is no evidence suggesting the stolen data has been misused. “The company is not aware of any misuse of individuals’ information as a result of this incident and has not seen electronic medical record databases appear in the data during the analysis,” the spokesperson added.

The cyberattack, which occurred in February 2024, stands as the most significant medical data breach in U.S. history. It led to prolonged disruptions across the healthcare sector. Change Healthcare, a leading health tech provider and claims processor, handles vast amounts of patient data, medical records, and insurance information.

Hackers behind the attack stole an extensive volume of sensitive health and insurance data, some of which was leaked online. Reports indicate that Change Healthcare paid at least two ransom payments to prevent further exposure of the compromised files.

Initially, UnitedHealth estimated the number of impacted individuals to be around 100 million when it filed a preliminary report with the Office for Civil Rights, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that oversees data breaches.

According to Change Healthcare’s breach notification, the cybercriminals accessed and stole:

  • Names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses
  • Dates of birth and government-issued ID numbers (Social Security, driver’s license, passport)
  • Medical diagnoses, prescriptions, lab results, imaging, and treatment plans
  • Health insurance details
  • Financial and banking data related to patient claims
The breach has been attributed to the ALPHV ransomware group, a Russian-language cybercrime network. Stolen data is often sold on the dark web or used for identity theft, medical fraud, or harassment. Ransomware attacks also target healthcare organizations due to their dependence on immediate system access.

Ascension Breached Due to Employee Downloading Malicious File

 

Ascension, one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States, disclosed that a ransomware attack in May 2024 was initiated when an employee mistakenly downloaded a malicious file onto a company device.

The healthcare provider indicated that the employee likely believed they were downloading a legitimate file, classifying the incident as an "honest mistake."

The ransomware attack disrupted the MyChart electronic health records system, phone lines, and systems for ordering tests, procedures, and medications. In response, Ascension took some devices offline on May 8 to address what was initially termed a "cyber security event."

As a result, staff had to record procedures and medications manually since electronic patient records were inaccessible. Ascension also temporarily halted some non-urgent elective procedures, tests, and appointments and redirected emergency medical services to other facilities to avoid delays in patient care.

As of Wednesday, Ascension reported that certain services remain affected and that efforts to restore electronic health record systems, patient portals, and phone systems, as well as test, procedure, and medication ordering systems, are ongoing.

An ongoing investigation revealed that the attackers accessed and stole files from only seven of the thousands of servers on Ascension's network.

"Currently, we have evidence showing the attackers accessed files from a limited number of servers used by our staff for daily tasks. These servers account for seven out of approximately 25,000 across our network," an Ascension spokesperson stated. "While the investigation continues, we believe some of the compromised files may contain Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII), though the specific data affected varies."

However, Ascension has not found evidence that the attackers accessed data from its Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other clinical systems, which contain comprehensive patient records.

Though Ascension has not officially identified the responsible party, CNN reported that the Black Basta ransomware group is suspected to be behind the attack.

Shortly after the incident, the Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Health-ISAC) issued a warning that Black Basta had intensified its attacks on the healthcare sector.

Since its emergence in April 2022, Black Basta has targeted numerous high-profile organizations, including Rheinmetall, Capita, ABB, and the Toronto Public Library. Research by Elliptic and Corvus Insurance indicated that the group had extorted over $100 million from more than 90 victims as of November 2023.

As a major nonprofit health network, Ascension operates 140 hospitals and 40 senior care facilities. In 2023, it reported a total revenue of $28.3 billion. The organization employs 8,500 providers, with 35,000 affiliated providers and 134,000 associates across 19 states and the District of Columbia.

The counterfeit drugs targeted by BrandShield predominantly belong to the GLP-1 class, including popular medications like Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy, as well as Eli Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound. Originally developed to manage type 2 diabetes, these medications have garnered attention for their additional benefits in weight loss, with patients experiencing significant reductions in body weight. Unfortunately, the efficacy and popularity of these drugs have also made them lucrative targets for counterfeiters seeking to exploit the growing demand. 

According to Reuters, the majority of the illicit websites shut down by BrandShield were purveyors of counterfeit GLP-1 drugs, indicating the scale of the problem. Alarmingly, studies suggest that an estimated 95% of all online pharmacies operate unlawfully, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue. 

Moreover, reported cases of harm linked to fake GLP-1 drugs have emerged in at least nine countries, underscoring the urgent need for action. BrandShield's recent crackdown on counterfeit drug websites represents a significant victory in the ongoing battle against online pharmaceutical fraud. The company's efforts have resulted in the closure of 90% of the identified pharmacy websites selling counterfeit GLP-1 medications. This operation accounts for just over 15% of the total counterfeit drug websites reported by BrandShield last year, emphasizing the scale of the challenge. 

Collaborating closely with the Pharmaceutical Security Institute (PSI), BrandShield employs rigorous evidence collection and intelligence gathering to identify and target illicit websites. By providing actionable intelligence to service providers hosting these websites, BrandShield facilitates their removal from the internet, effectively disrupting the operations of counterfeiters. Furthermore, the company coordinates with law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute criminal networks involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit drugs. 

In addition to targeting counterfeit drug websites, BrandShield's efforts extend to social media platforms, where it has removed nearly 4,000 fake drug listings. Notably, a significant portion of these listings—almost 60%—was found on Facebook, highlighting the need for vigilance across all online platforms. BrandShield's global reach ensures that illegal drug listings are eradicated from marketplaces in countries around the world, including India, Indonesia, China, and Brazil. 

Contrary to concerns raised earlier, the EMA found no evidence linking these medications to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or self-injury. This reaffirmation of safety aligns with previous findings by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), providing reassurance to patients and healthcare providers alike.
